What type of horse should I buy?

Any horse will drive, so the criteria falls on your needs. There are many factors to consider when buying your first horse. Are you a beginner? The temperament and size of horse you need are considerations.

Which is better, a 2 wheeled cart or a 4 wheeled carriage?

Safety is the first factor which must be considered when choosing what type of vehicle to drive. I recommend a two wheel cart for beginners. Reason being, where the horse goes the cart goes. Driving a four wheeler is like driving a 18 wheeler; there are two separate paths of travel. Prices vary from area to area. For most horses an easy entry cart is fine if you do not plan to show. If you plan to show get a meadow brook type cart.

I have a horse already. Can he be trained to drive?

Most likely yes, kickers must be corrected first, unless you are preparing for a pair of dentures! Plus you should always have a helper, and you do not want them injured.

Where can I buy a driving horse?

Can retired track horses be trained to become pleasure drivers?

(standardbreds) Yes, with a certain amount of retraining and depending on how well they drove to start.

How much will it cost me to start driving?

Good driving horses are in high demand, figure to spend a thousand dollars over the cost of the same horse not broke to drive. Drafts are considerably less. But you will pay more for tack and keep. A decent new leather pleasure harness is far superior to nylon. If you take care of it, it will last you twenty years or better. Drafts: A good used single harness will run $550 or more depending on your area.
